A total of 32 courses were given for 27 patient but the therapeutic responses were evaluated in 22 patients only, excluding the other 5 patients because of absence of subjective symptoms and objective signs.
Analysis was made of the presence of the palliation, the onset and duration of the palliation, and toxicity, of the drug.
Results were as follows:
1. Improvement of the subjective symptoms was obtained in 13 patients. (59%) and the objective regression was observed in 7 patients (32%).
2. Most patients experienced subjective improvement after 2 weeks of therapy and objective regression was observed after 3 weeks of therapy.
3. The average duration of the clinical remission was two to three months.
4. There was a transient remarkable response in all 5 patients who had cardiac or pyloric obstruction due to stomach carcinoma.
5. Ten in 27 patients (40%) developed mild transient gastrointestinal symptoms during the 1?2 weeks of therapy.
6. Transient leukopenia and thrombocytopenia were observed after 3-weeks of therapy in 12 patients (40%) and 5 patents (19%) respectively.
7. There was high correlation between the degree of palliation and the presence of leukopenia in the responders.
